Considering the gender inequality prevalent in India, the Population Foundation of India (PFI) launched the Sex Ki Adalat campaign. The aim here was to discuss critical issues related to sexual and reproductive health and rights of the youth and adolescents.

Consisting of five episodes, this courtroom drama series builds on the impact and success of the edutainment show Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon by PFI. Creator-director Feroz Abbas Khan focuses on sensitive subjects through real-life situations while adding a fun element to it.

Given the effect this campaign would bring about on our society, we put in our efforts to make this campaign a success. Look at what we pulled off!

Male Child

In our society, there is preference for a male child and there exist several misconceptions related to the factors determining the sex of a new born. This episode focuses on an unusual instance of a case filed by a woman against her husband as she accuses him of not being able to give her a son. The biological processes determining the sex of a new born finally emerge through an entertaining narrative of arguments and witness testimonies.

Age-old customs in patriarchal societies seek proof of a woman’s virginity before marriage. This episode centers on arguments of a feisty young girl against her fiancé’s demands that are played out in a powerful courtroom drama. We take a closer look at ethical as well as scientific aspects of placing importance on the virginity of women.

The topic of this episode revolves around how adolescents are shamed as they go through the experience leading to adulthood. A boy who is subjected to beating hauls his father to the Sex Ki Adalat where we are presented with arguments on the moral, biological and health aspects of masturbation.

Even today, menstruation is widely considered as the time in a woman’s life when she becomes impure and needs to be isolated from the rest of her family. This episode focuses on the distress this leads to and the loss of dignity for the woman. Through an engaging interplay of affection and angst, a couple argue in court about traditional beliefs until they are made aware of the scientific facts.

The judge of Sex ki Adalat is astonished when he is presented with the case of a child accusing his parents of forcing him to watch pornography. The narrative is woven around the common practice of parents avoiding discussion on sex with their children even when they reach adolescence and are flooded with questions on the subject. This episode is an entertaining repartee between a father and son and it unravels why it is important for parents to introduce their children to facts about sex.
